I was reflecting this weekend on how grateful I am that my own business coach opened up my eyes to leadership. This was something (somewhat foolishly) that I always thought I was pretty good at.
I treated my team nicely
I was approachable
I was always polite and respectful to them
I paid them on time
Hell I even took them all out at Xmas and treated them to a Xmas meal
But that was about it. I expected them to be able to run their classes as I would, work as hard as I did and even be prepared to go the extra mile to help grow the school - for me!
I got a little miffed when students or parents complained about a teacher and when their retention rates weren’t as good as mine. Is this sounding familiar?
I am somewhat ashamed now to admit that I had this exact mentally and attitude towards my team:
I am paying them good money so I shouldn’t have to hold their hand and step in to sort out problems, plus I don’t have time I am too busy, surely they should be able to just get on with it!
So when I stood in a hotel conference room in Sydney, Australia on a dance business owners retreat (yes I did actually fly across the world to attend a 4 day business course and meet my mentor, like a crazy woman) I had a magnificent glowing light bulb moment that turned that all around.
The reason they didn’t go out of their way to talk to parents, treat new tasters like they are gold and work with an absolute passion in helping me grow my school was for two reasons.
1 - I didn’t provide them with any training. I assumed they knew how to act and behave exactly like me (derrrrr)
2 - They were not invested in the growth of my school. I treated them like they should just be paid and get on with it so that’s exactly what they did. They showed up, taught, got paid and left.
In the following months after Sydney I learnt how to care more for my team, I spent months studying leadership in the dance industry, read many books and went back to basics with my team.
I arranged trainings and team bonding days, I spent time meeting up and touching base with them 1-1 as well as in a group, I sent little inexpensive gifts from time to time, I got to know them and helped them, I asked how they were on a regular basis (and actually meant it) and above all I started to GIVE!
Now my leadership style is sooooo very different. I invest time in nurturing and really showing up for my team. They are happier, they are certainly much more invested and above all they are more like mini me’s now. I can trust them to act and behave as I always desired.
So today I would love for you to take 5 minutes, make a coffee and grab a pad and marker pen and brain dump the following:
If I worked for me how would I feel as a team member?
Do I give my team opportunities for personal development lead by me?
How do I love on my team?
How do I show up for them?
How could I add more value to their professional lives?
Or course if you think you will answer these questions from a biased point of view, why not simply ask them??? eeeekkk!
The other thing you could do is let me help you. Click here to take a look at my brand new Masterclass called “Lead Like Never Before”
I am so proud of this masterclass because I think it will transform the way you lead your team. I will take you on a journey of learning all about them aswell as simple but hugely effective steps to becoming an awesome leader and principal. I feel sure you will absolutely love it!
Until next month, take care my lovelies.
